Browsers

As of June 2023, only a few browsers support Java applets. Their number may well shrink further in the near future.

Microsoft Edge    On Windwos PCs, the only browser able to run Java applets is EdgeHere is what to do: Start Edge and in the Options (...), choose Settings - Default Browser and activate the option to Allow sites to be reloaded in Microsoft Edge From any page of i-concrete, go to Options (...) and choose Reload in Internet Explorer Mode. In this configuration, Edge appears as Internet Explorer 11 and the applets work.
Safari
(on MacOS)
This browser still allows Mac users to use Java applets. Install a Java virtual machine by analogy with the indications for Windows.

End of Java applets

As of June 2023, somewhat against all expectations, it is still possible to run Java applets in Edge in Internet Explorer mode. The latest version of Java available is 1.8.0_371 and the applets work satisfactorily.

In January 2017, Oracle, which holds the rights to the Java platform, has announced that Java applets will be deprecated starting with version 9 of Java, scheduled for mid-2017 (July 27th at the latest news). This does not mean that it will be totally impossible to use Java applets, as it may still be possible to activate them but, owing to the small number of supporting browsers, this may not be the case. The Java Web Start solutions proposed by Oracle are not really suitable for our types of applets, which deeply rely on the interaction between the applet and our servers.

As much as possible, avoid to install version 9 of Java.
